The Chinese startup DeepSeek has been making waves in the global artificial intelligence (AI) arena by developing advanced models with significantly lower investments compared to giants like OpenAI, Nvidia, Microsoft, and Google. While these companies pour billions of dollars into AI research and development, DeepSeek has achieved notable results with just $6 million in funding.

Anyone who studied with me will remember my phrase:
“Depending on the technology, you can achieve a lot by spending little money and using brainpower. Or, you can pay a high price for technology that will help you solve the problem.”

Pros of DeepSeek’s Approach:

Resource Efficiency: DeepSeek has proven that significant advancements in AI can be achieved with limited resources, challenging the notion that massive investments are indispensable.

Accessibility: By adopting an open-source approach, DeepSeek facilitates access and collaboration within the AI community, potentially accelerating future innovations.

Cons and Challenges:

Performance and Accuracy: In tests I conducted, while DeepSeek is functional, it has clear limitations. In simple text generation, its performance is acceptable, but when handling complex content, the results can be unsatisfactory, with nonsensical phrases. In source code generation, some sections did not work correctly. Additionally, its response speed is slower than that of established competitors.

Reliability: DeepSeek has faced infrastructure challenges due to its rapid growth, including cyberattacks that led to a temporary restriction on new signups. Take a look at the availability graph from the company itself:

Future Challenges and Competitor Reactions:

DeepSeek needs to improve the quality and accuracy of its models to compete effectively with industry leaders. It must also strengthen its infrastructure to handle increased demand and mitigate security risks. Competitors like OpenAI, Nvidia, Microsoft, and Google will likely intensify their research and development efforts, aiming to maintain their dominance in the AI market.

Something to Think About While You Hunt Down That Pesky Bug in Your Code:

Would you entrust your business intelligence, secrets, and algorithms to a Chinese state-backed company?
And if so, how would your customers react to that decision?

Live Long and Prosper.
